Introduction to Economics by Prof. Dr. M. Sukirno, UKM This book, the latest title in the Economics series, has been written mainly to teach economics in colleges and universities in Indonesia on a wide range of topics. The author is the professor at University of Indonesia on Economics faculties, who also lectured on economics at Gadjah Mada University on centres for state university graduates preparing for public service examinations. He teaches English literature and language studies at Gadjah Mada University. The book, written in an easy-to-understand language, is especially useful to the ordinary person. Each chapter presents a thorough explanation of a single economics topic, which is presented from an economic perspective and in a clear and logical way that enables the ordinary person to understand even complex economic issues. The book uses examples from problems encountered by everyday people in the country's economy. The emphasis throughout the book is on how economics can help improve people's welfare. The chapters at the end of each chapter present a brief summary of the issues discussed in the chapter. A student who successfully completes this book would have a comprehensive understanding of all necessary economic topics from an economic perspective. Thus this book could also be used as a textbook, if combined with another economics-related textbook. The latter should cover major topics not covered in this book, such as law and non-economic theory. If economy is a science then economics textbooks must explain not only general concepts but also how these concepts apply to actual situations that arise every day, while ignoring social factors that have an effect on people's welfare. Inevitably, every textbook has to take account of the limitations imposed by reality and emphasize logical thinking and practical application. Nonetheless, this book does not provide a detailed discussion of all issues related to economics. Instead it gives a general overview of the subject and demonstrates how economic problems can be resolved or avoided.
